Organizational Development for Adult Literacy Programs

Program improvement is an ongoing concern of all quality adult literacy programs. NELRC staff facilitate program improvement efforts using diverse strategies customized to the contexts and needs of particular adult literacy programs. We design and facilitate processes that enable program staff and Boards to think together to address challenges and plan for the future; we assist them in identifying and including their diverse stakeholders in the planning and change process. Our work with literacy programs may focus on specific program elements or it may encompass all key aspects of the program resulting in a comprehensive strategic plan. Our staff draw on their experience in the adult literacy field to bring in broad knowledge about developments and promising practices in this field. We pride ourselves in our collaborative facilitation that yields new understandings, concrete outcomes and lasting agreements.

An important dimension of the program improvement process is the use of curriculum standards or frameworks to guide lesson planning and assessment. NELRC staff has been involved in the creation and implementation of the national Equipped for the Future standards, and the Massachusetts ABE Curriculum frameworks. We provide professional development and customized technical assistance to assist individual programs and consortia of programs in using curriculum standards or frameworks for program improvement.

We have worked with adult literacy grantees of the Hyams Foundation, the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, the National Institute for Literacy, Boston Adult Literacy Fund and the Mayor’s Office of New Bostonians. Our Equipped for the Future consultations currently serve the Washington DC Mayor’s Adult Literacy Initiative programs and a host of individual literacy providers. We offer workshops, mini-courses and consultations in the following areas:
